Two new reports on interventions designed to increase middle grades science achievement are available: Chemistry That Applies, an instructional unit for grades 8–10 exploring the laws of conservation of matter, and ThinkerTools (http://1.usa.gov/yIZ7Vq), a computer-based-program designed to increase middle school students’ understanding of physics and scientific modeling. Teachers can use it as a basis for a group scavenger hunt, for example: Teams of students can browse the site looking for items like something made from recycled tires, an electric car, a use for old bricks, a way to reuse coffee grounds, and so on.
